estonia invites south african entrepreneurs to join its digital nation through e‑residency
Estonia, one of the world’s most digitally advanced nations, is inviting South African business owners, entrepreneurs, and innovators to expand into the EU market and grow globally through its world-renowned e-Residency programme.

E-Residency empowers South African entrepreneurs to establish and run EU-based companies entirely remotely and online, without needing to be physically present in Estonia, using a secure government-backed digital identity and seamless digital business infrastructure.
With South Africa’s growing entrepreneurial ecosystem, digital transformation, and appetite for cross‑border opportunities, Estonia views South Africa as a key partner on the African continent. More than 450 South Africans have joined the e-Residency programme since its launch in 2014, with 150 companies already created.
Estonian delegation visits South Africa
A high‑level Estonian delegation, led by the country’s ambassador for South Africa and Kenya, and the Deputy Minister of Economic Development, will visit Cape Town and Johannesburg between 8-14 November to launch Estonia’s dedicated e‑Residency campaign.
The delegation will meet with local businesses, industry forums and government representatives, with the aim of building connections and raising awareness about the benefits of joining Estonia’s leading digital economy among South African business owners, particularly in the technology, SME and startup sectors.
“Our e-Residency programme opens the door for South African entrepreneurs to build and grow their business globally, backed by the credibility, security and transparency of a digitally advanced EU member state,” says Mariin Ratnik, Deputy Minister of Economic Development.
Mariin Ratnik, Deputy Minister of Economic Development“With an Estonian e-Residency, South African entrepreneurs have the opportunity to access the second largest single market in the world in a cost-effective manner, and with minimal bureaucracy.”
“SA’s e-Residency entrepreneurs will benefit from Estonia’s thriving startup ecosystem, excellent funding opportunities for innovation, and a business-friendly tax system that is ranked the most competitive in the OECD for 12 years in a row,” Ratnik says.
How to apply for e-Residency in South Africa
South African entrepreneurs are encouraged to apply for Estonian e-Residency during the official campaign that runs from 3 November until 18 December, via the Estonia e-Residency online application portal.
Applications received during this period will be processed in time for successful applicants to collect their formal digital ID and documentation from the temporary Estonian consular mission to South Africa in February 2026. E-Residency documentation and digital ID cards need be collected in person from key points for biometric activation. Read more on the process of becoming an e-resident.
Applications received after 18 December may not be processed in time for collection in February. Documentation will then need to be collected from an Estonian embassy, with the nearest Africa-based embassy located in Egypt.
