About me

I'm Maya Middlemiss, a freelance writer and podcaster specializing in the future of work and emergent technology. A British national and Estonian e-Resident since 2018, I have worked remotely since 2000, writing and consulting extensively on location-independent lifestyles. I host the "Future Is Freelance" podcast, lead the Remote Work Spain community, and contribute regularly to the e-Residency blog and other publications. Fascinated by technology's impact on society, I'm passionate about inclusiveness and accessibility in new ways of living and working. Based in Valencia, Spain, I love traveling to events and destinations, and when not at a keyboard or mic, I can usually be found up a mountain or on the beach.

"Estonian e-Residency for me represents a vital new frontier in the future of work. Being able to operate my Estonian business from anywhere, and collaborate with clients all over the world, has been transformative on a personal level. But it also represents a shift towards a borderless business future more globally, and a blend of life and work unrestricted by geographies and passports, which is incredibly exciting to observe. As a storyteller, being witness to this revolution from the inside, and collaborating with the entrepreneurs driving it forward, is an amazing privilege."

My journey

2018
I became an e-resident
I became an e-Resident in 2018, when I needed a business entity to contract a new area of freelance work as a content writer. That contract is long past, but my OÜ brought me many advantages and connections, so I have been glad to continue with it.

2018
I registered my company
I registered my company a day after collecting my e-Residency ID card, as I urgently needed to raise an invoice. With the assistance of Xolo (then known as Leap), this was accomplished in less than one day.
